Bihoro Pass

Real Big panorama

Bihoro pass is located between Teshikaga-cho and Bihoro-cho on 243 Line. Road Station is set at the top of the Bihoro Pass. and you will arrive viewpoint stepping up from the parking. You can enjoying the big panorama of the scenery of the biggest caldera lake of Japan “lake Kussharo” and Shiretoko Ranges in a fine day from the 525m high. Green in summer accentuates blue color of Lake Kussharo, and middle island is in the middle of the lake. This is one of the best viewpoint of Akan National Park.

The biggest caldera in Japan

The biggest caldera of Japan is in Akan National Park. Caldera means pot in Portuguese. This landscape was formed by a number of huge eruptions. Mountain ranges of Kussharo caldera such as Mt. Mokoto and Bihoro Pass surround Lake Kussharo. A rich nature consists of Lake, River, Forest, Volcano and Onsen. You can see such nature of Kussharo Caldera from Bihoro Pass.

Hisotry of Kussharo Caldera

History of Kussharo Caldera starts after a number of volcanoes 2 million – 100 million years ago. A number of eruptions started  2 hundred thousand years ago and lava from big eruptions flows out Okhotsk and Senkon Field and forms the land of Eastern Hokkaido. The center of volcano falls down due to the biggest size of the eruption hundred thousand years ago. The rages of Mt. Mokoto and Bihoro Pass is remaining of the past volcano. Water was stored in the caldera and Atosa-nupuri volcano, middle island volcano, Oyakotsu volcano of Wakoto peninsula and Mashu volcano were formed. After a number of volcanic activities, present Kussharo Caldera and volcano were formed.
