Looking down Lake Kussharo from North
Viewing from Mokoto pass is one way to feel a broad scenery of Lake Kussharo. Scenery from different pass is all different panorama view. Now we introduce pass located in North of Kussharo caldera. When we drive on 102 Line from Kawayu, you will find Mt. Mokoto Viewpoint Parking at 430m high. Not only looking down the lake, you can also see Mt. Iwo, Mt. Oakan, Okhotsk sea, Kawayu Onsen and any other Hokkaido-like scenery.
Mt. Mokoto Viewpoint Parking：Point 1
This parking is recommended to take rest between driving. Mountain which emits gas at left hand side is Mt. Iwo called “Atosa-nupuri” meaning naked mountain. Kawayu Onsen is located in the area before Mt,IWo. Middle island and Wakoto peninsula Kussharo are located in the lake. Looking around right hand side, you will see Akan’s mountain. This viewpoint is very comfortable if you breathe much. We will check if Lake Kussharo is frozen or not from here and Bihoro Pass in winter.
Point 2
Tsubetsu pass is very famous to see a sea of the clouds of Kussharo Caldera, but you can only go through the pass from June – October. If you would like to try to see a sea of the clouds, Mt. Mokoto Viewpoint Parking is a good point to visit because it is very close from Kawayu Onsen. It is just 30 minutes by car. Of course, you cannot always see it due to weather condition, but if you see it, you will be excited. In winter, we have also seen sun-pillar in January from here. Vapor in the air gets frozen when it is below minus 10 degree, you may sometimes see diamonddust.
